Each of the German Heavy Panzer Battalion had created a very unique insignia to represent themselves; in the case of the 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion, it was a Mammoth symbol perhaps representing heavy strength. Interestingly, the 502nd battalion was the first unit to receive and field the heaviest German combat tank at the time– PzKpfw VI Tiger, as known as the Tiger tank. While the battalion was assigned to the Eastern front, they saw action near Leningrad during late January 1943. There were nine Tigers with chassis numbers 250002 to 250010 assigned to the 502nd Battalion. The 502nd Tiger was classified as the initial production lot, it did not equipped with side trackguards or Feifel air filters and exhausts shrouds as seen in later Tiger models. To hide the exhaust gas flames, a piece of sheet metal sleeve was welded on each exhaust pipe. The tank was painted overall with very heavily-weathered winter camouflage over the basic German grey hull colour. This particular Tiger with tactical number Nr.100 printed on two Rommelkist (German word: turret tool box) located on both side of the turret was slightly damaged on 17/18. Janurary 1943 combat due to lack of repairing equipments, it was abandoned in field and eventually being towed away way by Russian from the front line.
